Story- telling is a key leadership tool in some of the most successful companies and while the art of verbal storytelling is important, a story can also be visually conveyed with graphics and the use of space through the design process. Experiential graphic design integrates a sto- ry narrative with the built environment to cre- ate a memorable experience. Clients increasingly leverage EGD features to support, and in some case develop, an organization’s brand. Our firm uses a range of materials – from coffee beans to crayons – to help tell our story. Branded spaces are becoming sensory-rich jour- neys. Storytelling in built space requires much more than a simple logo or mission statement on the wall. To create unique and relevant environ- ments, designers must take an integrated approach to communicating message and values, and use brand messaging tools – from materials to lighting to creative technology – that deliver impactful and emotional connections to space. In order to build a strong, tailored story for our clients, the EGD team is heavily involved at the project’s visioning stage. We initiate our own set of queries and exercises to ascertain big-picture in- sight into a client’s brand, culture and people – all ultimately to be expressed via features like wall graphics, site-specific artworks, interactive and digital displays, applications of branded color and materials, and additional sensorial gestures. We have to ask key questions: Who will be experienc- ing this and why am I designing it? What is the focus? What will deliver ease, delight, or even aes- thetic pleasure?
