Burns Launches “Career Connections” Program
A Letter fromDirector Dr. Barbara Jackson
We are excited!
Student enrollments are up and inquiries are rolling in at record
numbers at the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management.
The real estate markets are on an uphill trajectory and construction activity is bustling
once again in Denver. There couldn’t be a better time to launch our new Career
Connections Program that connects Burns School students and graduates seeking
internships and jobs with Colorado RE/CM companies seeking talent.
The new program features two types of regularly scheduled career connection activities:
• Industry Forums
Industry forums highlight individuals from several companies representing a distinct
sector of the market. For example, our first Industry Forum featured two very successful developers
sharing their personal stories, and tracking their careers from college graduation to their first deals, to
their current state of success. These informal armchair chats provide an opportunity for industry
practitioners to share their various backgrounds and paths to success to groups of students, and recent
alumni, who want to get a better sense of direction for their own careers. Each forum concludes with an
open Q & A session followed by a greet-and-meet networking opportunity.
• Info and Interview Sessions
These sessions will begin in January. On a weekly basis, individual
companies will sign up and be scheduled to come to DU to conduct an informal info session to share
information about their companies, their projects, and the career opportunities available to DU interns
and graduates. The info sessions will be held one evening per week with the option to schedule student
interviews the next morning right on campus. Younger students seeking internships, as well as graduating
students are encouraged to attend to get to know the companies, and individual members of those
companies, on a first name basis. Our goal is for students to find a fit for their futures and make a career
connection that leads to success for themselves and their employer.
We are very enthusiastic about this new program. It provides an opportunity for our students to recognize
that their professional careers and connections start long before they graduate, and for participating RE/CM
employers to have early access to the best and the brightest long before the rest of the market. As the
market heats up, we know the competition for good talent will heat up right along with it. We want to make
sure our students, and the companies that will most likely hire them, have a head start in making
connections and creating relationships.
