It was good to see the old familiar faces and many new ones. We had a lot of folks who celebrated birthdays during the summer months as well as October. Our entertainment was provided by magician Gary Kane. This month, our entertainer will be our own No Name Band. Those who have heard this fun band perform know they’re in for a treat. There’s sure to be something to everybody’s liking. We’re looking forward to welcoming back those folks who have been away for the summer, and certainly, all newcomers. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Friday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. in the Rec. 1 Ballroom. If you had your photo taken last month, don’t forget to pick it up at the birthday table. For those of you who haven’t any idea what Open Door is all about, here’s the scoop. We’re strictly a social organization established for the sole purpose of getting friends and neighbors together for a good time of listening to entertainment and enjoy- ing refreshments afterward. It’s a great way to make new friends and visit with those you already know. We also recognize those folks who have birthdays during the current month. The birthday guests are honored with a corsage, our famous Open Door Happy Birthday song and a free photo. Aspecial birthday table is always set aside for the honorees and their family and friends. Plan on coming out to see what we’re all about. The best thing of all is the entire program is free! Now that’s a great deal! Being thankful reminds us of all the good things we have in life. It also helps us take a step back and not take for granted the people and beauty around us. Being grateful also has a number of perks. It lifts your spirits and makes you a happier and healthier person. And scie ce backs this up! Some Thankful Benefits Practicing gratitude provides several important health benefits: Increased Patience: According to research from Northeastern University, “people who felt grateful for li tle, everyday things were more patient and better able to make sensible decisions compared to those who didn’t feel very gracious on a day-to-day basis.” Deep Connections: Gratitude strengthens our relationships with others. By appreciating others, you increase the production of oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland—a pe -sized structure at the base of the brain. It is sometimes referred to as the “cuddle hormone” or the “love hormone” because it is released when people snuggle or bond socially. Improved Sleep: Research shows that feeling grateful help people sleep better and longer. As Emma Seppala, a happiness researcher at Stanford and Yale Universities, says, “Count blessin s, not sheep because you have more positive thoughts before you go to sleep.” She also suggests writing in a gratitude journal before going to bed to soothe the nervous system and induce restfulness. Good Health: Studies reveal there is a positive relationship between gratitude and one’s physical and emotional health. According to the study, “Personality and Individual Differences,” gratitude reduces negative feelings, makes us happier and helps us rebound faster from stress. People who practice gratitude also experience fewer physical aches and pains. Emotional Well-being: Gratitude gives people a more positive and balanced emotional well-being. It reduces feelings of envy, resentment and depression. Smell the Roses There is no special trick to being more thankful. It is simply being aware of all the good around you, every minute of every day. Awareness and practicing a few habits will make all the difference. To improve your sense of gratitude, try these three tips: 1. Take deep, slow breaths and count to 10. 2. Stop what you are doing and appreciate the beauty around you. 3. Practice self-talk. Repeat theword, “relax,” or another comforting word or phrase, and remind yourself that whatever is going on isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. Throughout the day, take time to focus on the positive—little and big things in your life that you are grateful for. Within no time, your spirit will be lifted. You will feel happier, healthier and enjoy deep relationships with family and friends. There’s no time to like the present to start. Happy Thanksgiving! But if you are like most people, clutter is all around you. If you are a hoarder, it’s even worse. What most people d n’t realize is that chaotic spaces create anxiety. “Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless and overwhelmed. Yet, rarely is clutter recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives,” xplains psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter. But don’t worry, the secret to decluttering is simple: start small. For example, focus on one thing only, like cleaning out a drawer. Then don’t start another task until you complete the first one. Many people try to tackle clutter by mult taski g and going from one project to another. This usually backfires, causing you to oscillate between projects and not getting anything done. The end result is more chaos. This is not the best way to proceed. In fact, it makes you feel more overwhelmed and creates a t te of paralysis. According to Psychology Today, “That start/ top process is rough on us; rat r than saving tim , it costs time (even very small micro seconds), it’s less efficient, we make more mistakes, and over time it can be energy sapping.” Thankfully, there is a better way. Here are some decluttering tips: 1. Five Minutes a Day: Start with decluttering with five minutes daily. Baby steps are important and a healthy start. Then take another five minutes tomorrow and the next day. You will see results in no time! 2. Tackle One Area: Choose a shelf or counter and start getting ride of non-essentials. 3. File Away: Designate an inbox tray or spot in your home or office and don’t put papers anywh re but that spot . This way, you’ll know where receipts, ail, etc. ar . 4. G t Cal ndar: Print or buy a calendar with space under each day. For each day, write only one task. Make sure you don’t schedule one big task after another. Instead, aim to complete one big task per week. If your projects extend t the foll wing month, print out another calendar and continue. 5. Give to Charity: Fill a box with all the items you don’t use and donate them. It will be satisfying knowing that as you create a more positive space, you are helping someone else. A clutter-free life is within reac . By decluttering, y u will create a serene space to thrive and experience that elusive zen! Find Zen by Decluttering
