When a death occurs, it can be a very emotional time. Often, what needs to take place can be confusing or vague at best. First and foremost, families must take time to grieve and work through the emotions that will surface. The first few weeks should be spent around loved ones and tending to funeral or celebration of life occurrences. Contact friends and family, clergy, the decedent’s physicians, and any other professionals that should be aware of the passing. Establishing a living trust helps those left behind avoid the expense and hassle of probate, however there are still actions that must be completed. Inventory of Assets. Each asset that was noted in the trust must be identified including determination of title and ownership. Also, any assets that were not part of the trust documents must also be included. Valuation of Assets. Proper valuation of assets can have important income tax, capital gains tax, property tax, estate tax and inheritance tax implications. All assets must be valued upon death. Outside person, object or event: Gawking at accidents while driving or looking at people or events outside the vehicle is enough to distract you, leading to rear-end collisions. 4. Other occupants: Talking, glancing or looking at your passengers places your attention off the road. If you must talk, keep the conversation brief. 5. Reaching for your cellphone or other device: Talking on your phone (even using the hands-free option) is worse but reaching for it also contributes to accidents. Keep your cellphone off and out of reach while driving! So, don’t be distracted and set a good example on the road by following the rules. Respect the speed limit to ensure your safety and your neighbor’s. A safe community is what we strive for.
