Leisure World Art Association Submitted by Carol Pope The Leisure World Art Association has kicked off its fall season by welcoming everyone back. Our October meeting brought several new members and regular seasoned artists. The results of the May Survey were shared with all present. New ideas for further discussion in November included changing the meeting time, election of new officers and the Christmas party in December. A nomination committee is reaching out to all members to seek volunteers for the coming years. Pat Billingsley has agreed to be the Internet Specialist for the LW Art Association. She will be a great asset to our organization, assisting with updating our member roster and bylaws. The Wine and Paint night went over well. Twenty artists were present to enjoy the camaraderie of friends. Lori Pilato volunteered to teach the class and everyone went home with a new piece of art. Classes for the upcoming year are being offered soon, see the Leisure World Art Studio for upcoming events. An interesting program is presented at each meeting. Leisure World Quilters Submitted by Carol Stickling We have been working hard to get quilts and bags ready for the Craft Fair on November 17. September and October were busy months. In October, we had a guest speaker from the Aid to Women Center. November will be a busy month with the Craft Fair and preparing for the holidays. We will sell tickets for our raffle quilt before and at the Craft Fair. A picture of the quilt is in this edition of the LW newspaper. Any member of our group will have raffle tickets for sale. All proceeds go to our group for purchase of supplies and quilt fabric. Later in November, we will have a guest speaker who will show us how to make a large Christmas tree quilt. This can be used as a throw or displayed on a wall. We welcome all quilters to our group! We meet on Thursdays from 9 - 11:30 a.m. in the Club Room or the Ballroom and have all levels of quilters, from beginners to very experienced. We are pleased to present Los Primos Mariachi band. Tami Rodriquez and her merry musicians will entertain us Monday, November 5. These young people, ranging from 12 to 19-years old, have been together for eight years practicing their skills. It all started when Tami and her husband Rodrigo attended a Mesa Arts Center Festival and were in awe of the Mariachi band playing there. They both decided that exposing and teaching this time-honored profession to their children would enrich their lives and teach them discipline, help them become cultured and keep them out of trouble. Their children were enrolled in a class at the Center the very next day. As a result, Lo Primos, consisting of six cousins, was born. Los Primos have been taught by the best, even a 70-year-old “el maestro.” They play at birthdays, weddings, quinceaneras (sweet 15 parties for girls; 18 for boys), parties, anniversaries, etc. Their instruments sing out traditional and ballad fare, while their authentic uniforms are from Mexico. Come join us Monday, November 5 in the Rec. 1 Ballroom. Please bring a dish to share, your own tableware and a friendly smile. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and we dine at 6 p.m. We’ll also pay tribute and give thanks to all our veterans. For more information, call 602-616-3121.
