B20 November 2018 • Wellness • www.lwca.com For many, the holiday season is a happy time of family get-togethers, festivities and fun. But for those who are recently bereaved, the holidays may evoke feelings of emptiness, sadness and pain. So how do you get through it? And how can people who have suffered significant loss create new and positive experiences during the holidays? That’s what Hospice of the Valley will answer in a presentation on “Coping with Grief at the Holidays” on Nov. 16, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the agency’s East Clinical Office, 2020 E. Woodside Ct., Gilbert, 85297. This no-cost talk is open to the community. Registration starts at 11 a.m. To RSVP, call 602-636-5393 or email events1@hov.org. Other Healing Options Light Up a Life, sponsored annually by Hospice of the Valley, will also be held on. Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at Steele Indian School Park Amphitheater, 300 E. Indian School, Phoenix. This communitywide grief remembrance observance celebrates the lives of loved ones who have died. The evening features a photo montage set to beautiful music projected against the night sky. Everyone is welcome at this no-cost event. Another source of comfort could be attending a Hospice of the Valley grief support group. The group at Leisure World meets from 1 - 2:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays in Rec. 1. No need to register, just come. Ways to Cope Here are some grief counselor recommendations for those struggling with loss: • Try something new: This year, consider new ways to celebrate. Go out to a restaurant. Travel somewhere. Visit relatives or friends. It’s ok to scale back on decorations and holiday traditions. • Take care of yourself: Exercise, eat healthy meals, get enough rest and avoid excessive alcohol, which can cause depression. • Express your feelings: It’s normal to feel sad. Let your emotions out. Lean on the people who care for you and let them know what you need. • Give to others: There’s nothing like helping others to get our minds off ourselves. If you’re up to it, find a way to brighten someone else’s holiday season through the gift of your presence. Volunteer, donate or seek out people in need. You’re likely to experience the holiday spirit by sharing yourself with others. For more grief support resources, visit www.hov.org .
