Leisure World News • Wellness • March 2022 B21 On Valentine’s Day, 1976, we were married in a small foothill community east of Sacramento, California. With our blended family of nine children, then mostly grown, we were ready to begin some new adventures. Being teachers, we were fortunate to have time in the summer to explore far off places, many of which coincided with my teaching curriculum. First, we chose Spain and Portugal. Our “Bible” was Frommer’s “Europe on $5 a Day.” After spending a week in Madrid, we traveled by bus and train. We had joined a Home Exchange Club, which allowed several weeks of free lodging. Over the years, we enjoyed visiting many countries. By traveling frugally and staying in small inns and hostels, we were able to become acquainted with locals and their customs. As we neared retirement, we began to seek activities to fit into our everyday lives. Fitness was already part of our lifestyle. Paul worked out playing handball during his lunch break. I went to a nearby gym after school. On weekends, we rode our bicycles around our hilly countryside. But the lifestyle change for us was entering the world of square dance and round dance. Soon, we were taking lessons and dancing several times a week and attending weekend festivals in other communities. Everybody had RVs of one sort or another for these. We needed one, our new “dancing friends” helped us learn the ropes of RVing. One of our round dance teachers said something about “Mesa” being the “Round Dance Capital of the World.” Really? Where was Mesa? Obviously, we found it. We began our new lifestyle in Mesa slowly. First, we stayed only a month, which over several years grew to six months. At this point, we decided that we might as well move there! Dancing friends introduced us to LeisureWorld. Several of their friends invited us to tour their homes. This was on a Friday in 1998. By Monday, we were being shown properties by a salesperson from Leisure World realty. Before the week was over, we had signed papers to purchase manor 2175, where we remain today. Over the years, we have made many friends through our dance activity. Although we no longer round or square dance, we enjoy social dancing, especially in our own Leisure World ballrooms. In those early days, Paul took wood shop and marquetry classes and taught marquetry for a time. We made use of the two small gym rooms, separate women’s and men’s, equipped with treadmills, exercycles and resistance machines. We had a staff of trainers who were skilled at doing their best with what they had. Paul was a regular hiker in our desert trails, especially those in the Red Mountain area behind Las Sendas. He also did several hikes of the Grand Canyon trails. Together, we took yoga classes and a Tai Chi class here in Leisure World. Then, a wonderful transformation took place where the old gym rooms had been. A first-class Fitness Center with modern fully-equipped restrooms with lockers, showers and saunas and a large classroom where we are now offered a multitude of classes. We signed up for Sue’s, ”Strength and Balance,” class. Later, we began Susan’s “Hustle and Muscle” class. During the Covid lockdown, it was wonderful to continue those exercises with Susan on her Leisure World videos. Of course, live classes are the best! It is fun to meet up with the friendly members of our class and exchange quick little visits before class. Soon the music begins, and Susan has created a new routine for us. Meanwhile, Paul is now off to the Rec. 2 pool to swim laps three times a week. It’s a very good life for the Kingsbury’s in LeisureWorld! We are so excited to be in our busiest time of the year at the Fitness Center! A new season is the perfect time to share some standard gym etiquette in the Fitness Center. Your safety is our number one priority. The goal is to keep everyone safe and practice healthy habits in an area with many moving bodies and heavy equipment. Please be aware that your behavior affects other people. Fitness Center etiquette is more important than ever to keep our members safe and our space clean. In short, we have four simple rules for patrons to follow: 1. Clean up after yourself. 2. Be safe and prevent the spread of germs. 3. Share with others. 4. Be nice. Safety First When everyone follows these guidelines, it creates a safe and comfortable environment, allowing everyone to exercise without having to worry about what the person next to them is doing. These are no-nonsense, common-sense guidelines we should live by daily. Clean it Up: It is standard gym etiquette to wipe equipment off before and after you use it. Use our high-grade disinfectant wipes to clean the equipment you use to keep yourself and others healthy. Be Safe: Safety is our number one concern at Leisure World. Please stay home if you have a cold, flu or COVID-like symptoms! Hand sanitizer stations are located throughout the Fitness Center for your safety and convenience. Additional safety measures include using a daily locker (key is provided) inside the locker rooms to store your bags and personal belongings to prevent tripping hazards. Be sure to remove your belongings when finished and leave the key in the locker for the next person to use. Don’t Sit on Equipment You are Not Using It: During our busy season, please be considerate of sitting on equipment that you are not using. Prolonged resting and/or chatting with a friend may prevent another member from being able to use that machine or bench, etc. We love the camaraderie that occurs in the Fitness Center, but please be aware of the equipment needs of others. Pick Up Your Equipment: If you use something, put it back. This makes it available for someone else to use right away. Remove weight plates and return them to their proper place. Cleaning up after ourselves creates a more user-friendly environment and helps other more easily locate equipment. It also creates a safer environment by preventing tripping hazards. No Phone Calls: Although you may use your phones for music and/or have them nearby during your workout, talking on the phone is not allowed in the fitness area. There are times when taking a call may be necessary, but if possible, please take the call in the lobby or outside. Be Nice The Fitness Center is a shared space for all our residents. Please be mindful of others’ workout space. Be respectful of social distancing guidelines. In the end, these etiquette guidelines boil down to the same concept: be considerate of other people. By following these simple rules, the Oasis Health Spa Fitness Center will continue to be friendly and healthy place to exercise for all! Fitness Center Etiquette
