8 SOUTHERN SENIOR MAGAZINE | Fall 2023 Sociologists tell us social interactions and a cir- cle of friends are important to our mental and physical health. According to Harvard Health Publishing in their June 1, 2019 issue of Mind and Mood newsletter, “A strong social life has been linked with many health benefits, like less risk of depression and longer life span. But a new study suggests that interacting with a wide range of people may offer even greater bene- fits.” In case you’re wondering where to find friends and connect with social circles, I’ve got a sug- gestion. Join the Friends of the Library. The Friends group affiliated with your local library has a lot to offer. The Friends are people like you who come together to support the mission of the local li- brary. Through fund-raising and information- sharing, they reach out to the community and help build awareness of the library’s offerings. No special education or background is required, just a love of reading and anything related to it. Local Friends chapters operate independently, working within their library system to enhance the library experience for those patrons. Advice and media support come from United for Li- braries, the national organization which spon- sors National Friends of the Library Week.
