THE GREAT COURSES – HOW TO LISTEN TO AND UNDERSTAND GREAT MUSIC, PART 1 : Tuesdays, June 19 and July 3, at 6 p.m. in CENTERPOINT WEST. “Classical” or “serious” music doesn’t have to be stuffy and boring, particularly when presented by Robert Greenberg, Ph.D., music historian with San Francisco Performances and former faculty member of San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The scope of this course is so vast that we’ll only be able to do a sampling, but we’ve picked some that we think you’ll enjoy. In Part I we’ll feature the usual suspects Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi (aka Joe Green) and look into some opera. Part II will be Nov. 6, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4. Join Active Minds as we explore a chapter of this story from World War II: the Tuskegee Airmen. These African American pilots were the first black military aviators in the U.S. armed forces. Kathleen Arnold explores the American Revolution through the eyes of the artists of the time. The American Revolutionary Era began in 1763 and ended in 1789. Often the history and events of this period were captured by artists on canvases or print and made available for public display. But is what we see in historic artworks reality or merely the imagination of the artist who painted them? And who are those people portrayed in historical paintings?
