June 2018 Page 9 The Cop Shop will be in the lobby of CenterPoint from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 2, 6, 16 and 20. They also host special events once a month. Look for details below. Cop Shop is operated by volunteers who work with the Denver Police Department to assist with citizen complaints, accident reports and various other activities that would normally require a trip to the district station. Need to file a minor accident or crime report? Have questions about scams, fraud or city services? Stop by the Cop Shop. The Cop Shop volunteers are looking forward to getting to know you and sharing a wide variety of resources. C ommunity O perated P olicing Storefront COP Shop @ WG Dear Cop Shop: I am afraid to cross the street these days because cars go so fast and run through stop signs. Why can’t anything be done to slow people down? Nervous Nelly Dear Nervous: We don’t know exactly when the transition from being patient to always being in a hurry started but fast seems to be the norm. The police department issues hundreds of traffic violation citations, people pay fines and the behavior doesn’t change. Like it or not, drivers and pedestrians have to be on the defensive. Never assume because there is a sign, someone will stop or slow down. Remember how our parents always said “look both ways” before crossing? Now, it’s look both ways and then look both ways again. Drivers and pedestrians are equally responsible for being aware of surroundings. And here’s a fact you might not know. According to the police department, the majority of speeding tickets issued in neighborhoods are given to people who actually live in the area. The next time you are out, take a Dear Cop Shop look at your own speed when traveling on local streets. Are you over or under the limit in familiar places? Do you come to a full stop at signs or do you kind of coast through if you don’t see another vehicle or pedestrian? Take a look and urge your family and friends to do the same. The Cop Shop P.S.
