CONTENTS
Letter from the Editor
W
elcome to the inaugural
issue of the Health Care
Properties Quarterly.
This Colorado Real
Estate Journal special sec-
tion will highlight all health care-
related property types, including
hospitals, medical office buildings,
specialty centers, ambulatory sur-
gery centers, stand-
alone emergency
departments, urgent
care centers, skilled
nursing facilities,
long-term acute
care facilities, senior
housing, rehabilita-
tion and wellness
centers, and other
real estate involved
in the continuum of care.
The aim of this publication is to go
beyond just transactional news and
examine the numbers and trends
happening within Colorado’s health
care market.
In this debut issue, you will see sec-
tions devoted to the overall market
outlook, news from across the state,
broker insights, management and
construction.
Additionally, a number of industry
insiders weigh in on how consum-
ers are driving and changing the
nature of health care not only from
how it’s provided but also where it’s
delivered. Cheryle Powell discusses
consumer driven health care and the
retailization of the industry. Dann
Burke writes about the evolution in
health care real estate moving toward
the consumer and increased com-
petition between hospital systems
to keep customers. Chad Pinnell
and Jason Clark ask the question, “If
patients behave more like consumers,
shouldn’t providers behave more like
retailers?”
Health Care Properties Quarterly,
too, includes a senior housing and
care section. The section features a
Q&A from experts in the industry
and several articles on the design and
construction of senior-living com-
munities. Will Denning takes a look at
steps to prevent damaging water loss
at senior-living communities. Jami
Mohlenkamp speaks about designing
senior living or rehabilitation com-
munities for not only the day-to-day
experiences of residents but also visi-
tors, staff and people passing by on
the street.
Combined, the news and features
that follow aim to give a glimpse of
how Colorado’s health care industry
– just like the Colorado Real Estate
Journal – is growing and changing.
I hope you enjoy the latest special
section of the CREJ.
