“If the grass is greener on the other side, you
can bet the water bill is higher.” Life is amazing,
fantastic, interesting, great, painful, strenu-
ouns, confusing, unjust and often crazy. But it’s
also incredibly funny if you know how to look at
it. There are as many ways to solve problems as
there are problems, but Shyam thinks the best
way is to laugh at it first. A flaneur on the streets
of life. Shyam writes about the travails of be-
ing a cinephilic, literary, cricket-loving, snack-
munching, humorous Father of 3 ABCDs.
After receiving another call to send my article, I sat
down to pen my thoughts, but my mind as usual
went blank. So much is going on around us and we
have become immune and insensitive to much of the
incidents taking place in this world. Other than an
occasional sound of sympathy or empathy, we have
stopped reacting to much of the incidents unless, of
course, it is movies or sports.
Of late, as the kids are getting ready to move out of
home, I started looking at things through the prism
of kids. I cannot enjoy movies where kids are shown
to get hurt; I will not watch sports if I cannot discuss
the game with the kids; and I will not stand by any
incident where kids are the casualty.
Talking about the casualty, the recent killings at
the Orlando club is deplorable at every level. Every
leader and politician worth their salt has condemned
the incident, but the rhetoric was in the same lines.
Some criticized the religious radicalism and some
talked about the gun fanaticism. I am neither a Poli-
tician nor a decision-maker, but I think we can start
making a difference from a different and definitive
side. By starting at home!
Before we talk to our kids about Race, Religion,
God or our Traditions, we should talk to them about
being human. We should talk to them about seeing
ourselves in another human being and not a specific
race or religion. We should talk about empathy, kind-
ness and compassion before talking about the color,
caste and the creed. Home is the first place on earth
where the negative seeds are sown; differences are
taught and disparities are conveniently explained.
But for us to teach our kids, we need to start prac-
ticing the change. We should be careful of what we
say and how we say in front of our kids. Remember!
They understand and latch onto negative emotions
immediately.
Don’t be a stranger to your kids! Be with them,
talk to them and take an active part in their lives. Yes,
kids tend to move away from parents at a certain age,
but that should not become an excuse for us to move
away from the kids. We can still take an active part
in their lives without encroaching on their personal
space which they tend to protect fiercely. Let them
