N
ortheastern Junior College located in Sterling, is one of the state’s best
two-year schools, providing a diverse program in arts and humanities. The
renovation of E.S. French Hall included the expansion of the main lobby,
classrooms, galleries, performance and support spaces, including the 550-seat,
proscenium-style Dorthy J. Corsberg Theatre, where the acoustical finishes and
materials, the audiovisual (AV) system, the technical intercom, the assistive listen-
ing systems, theater rigging, drapery, and the performance lighting systems were
all replaced. A new flexible drama classroom/theater space, complete with a pipe
grid, was created for rehearsals, instructional use or small performances, much like
an experimental or black box theater. D. L. Adams Associates Inc. was the acousti-
cal and theatrical consultant for the project and provided analyses and acoustical
recommendations to address sound isolation and mechanical noise for the entire
building and designed all of the theater performance systems.

onsilium Design and the Stanley Marketplace development team are dedi-
cated to adaptive reuse and sustainable redevelopment at the historic Stan-
ley Aviation facility in Aurora:
• Westerly Creek and its shoreline wetlands are preserved in place.
• Salvageable materials are repurposed in addition to original structural elements.
• Impervious surfaces are minimized to reduce runoff.
• Shared parking reduces paving needed.
• Pervious paving is used within plaza spaces.
• Extensive parking lot landscape areas incorporate bio swales and provide ad-
ditional shade trees.
• The landscape is dominated by drought-tolerant, cold-hardy native and natural-
izing plants.
• Irrigated turf is limited to active play areas and plazas.
• Expanded bike parking and service stations are provided.
• Pedestrian paths connect the marketplace to adjacent neighborhoods.
H
ord Coplan Macht designed the new PK-12 school in Elbert on the same
site the original school built in the 1930s. The new school was designed to
allow for community access to the gymnasiums, cafeteria and the library,
which is shared between the school and the community of Elbert. To emphasize
the importance of the school as a joint-use community facility, the design strived
not only to provide direct access to the public spaces, but also to provide views
between them. During the occasion of a community event, one will see the school
activated and energized as a basketball game takes place on the lower level, con-
cessions are served in the main level, and the public visits the community library
on the upper level.
