Plotting a Novel, Memoir, or
Screenplay
The Structure That Holds It All
Together
Mythic structure can be found in almost
every myth worldwide from ancient times
to modern-day blockbusters, like Star Wars,
Harry Potter, and Avatar. This structure
creates compelling stories and provides
organization, giving you an essential tool to
complete a novel, memoir, or screenplay.
Students will learn about the 12 stages of
the hero’s journey and use those 12 stages
to plot the main character’s journey. During
class students will work with their own story
ideas and turn them into functional outlines.

Comic Books Aren’t Just for
Kids
Getting Started in Comics &
Graphic Novels
Comic books are more popular than ever,
both as a storytelling medium as well
as a starting point for launching larger
multimedia properties. Get an overview of
the process of creating a comic book, from
concept to production and distribution.
Explore where ideas come from, what sells,
what a script looks like, and how you can
find the collaborators you’ll need. Get ideas
about directions you might go with your
comic book from publishing to expanding it
into a full graphic novel to developing it for
other media. Whether you are an artist who
wants to venture into a new medium or are
a storyteller with ideas that you think would
work as a comic or graphic novel, this class
will get you going. Collaboration within the
class is encouraged.

Write a Blockbuster!
Secrets to Successful Modern
Fiction, Memoir, & Screenplay
There are elements in common to all
blockbusters, regardless of genre, that
can be identified and mimicked. This class
dissects modern bestsellers like
Eat, Pray,
Love, The Hunger Games
series, or
Wild
, to
discover the repeatable elements that all
successful manuscripts have in common.
Once you know the elements of a successful
story, you can weave them into your work
from the very beginning. In class, learn how
to analyze successful movies and books
on your own, and practice incorporating
key elements into opening, hooks, and
scenes. The focus is on concrete, descriptive
language, action, character motivation,
emotion, conflict and how to use them to
maximum effect. Leave with some new
writing skills and the knowledge of how to
model your work after that of authors who
have been extremely successful.
