Timeless and transparent:
RNL-designed BakerHostetler
B
akerHostetler, an international, full-service law firm, relocated to the newly
updated 1801 California Street building.
With that move came the opportunity to design a timeless, purposeful space
with layered transparency and intricate detailing.
Extraordinary views of both mountain and cityscape await visitors upon entry
to BakerHostetler’s 43,000-square-foot Denver office. A blend of glass, intricate
marble floor patterning, as well as wood ceiling and wall elements create a refined,
elegant palette that reinforces the geometry of the building and maximizes views.
A grand staircase was added to bridge the two floors, creating a physical connec-
tion and interaction opportunity for employees.

CSU’s Animal Sciences Building enters
a new era with top-to-bottom renovation
C
olorado State University’s Animal Sciences Building underwent a major renovation
over the past year – another in a long series of CSU projects completed by GH Phipps.
The school unveiled the upgraded and updated facility during a recent ribbon-
cutting, when officials, donors (including noted animal scientist and CSU professor Temple
Grandin), students, members of the Phipps team and representatives of BennettWagner &
Grody Architects PC gathered to tour the “new”Animal Sciences Building.
“We finally have a building that matches the great quality of our students and our great
faculty,” Animal Sciences Department Head Kevin Pond said. “This is a place where they
can learn and be exposed to modern techniques and technologies. We’re really excited.”
The $11 million project began in spring 2013 and was completed in several phases as
funding became available.
The Rocky Mountain Collegian,
published by CSU students,
describes Animal Sciences as the largest department on campus; students were involved
in the design of the building and its amenities.
The building, which dates from 1959, now includes several more targeted animal re-
search labs, and new conference rooms, offices and classrooms to support Animal Sci-
ences’ research and education. These include spaces earmarked for teaching food safety
and microbiology, as well as beef cattle breeding and genetics, and animal handling and
well-being.

JG Architects on The Grove
N
orris Design collaborated closely with Zocalo and JG Architects to design
a unique, LEED-certified community for empty-nesters that blends resort-
style living with a walkable, healthy lifestyle.
Within 100 steps of Stapleton Town Center and at the hub of miles of walking and
biking trails, The Grove appeals to an active lifestyle.
Amenities include a zero-entry pool with lap lanes, hot tub, shade cabanas, com-
munity gardens, potting shed, bike repair and storage, rain garden, outdoor grilling
area and dog park. The design goal of the community was, from the outset, to cre-
ate a true sense of place that fit within the Stapleton brand.
