Keeping Hope Alive
I went to the 45th People’s
Fair at Civic Center Park
in early June. It has been
at least 15 years since I
attended this amazing
collection of local groups
celebrating summer and
community. It has grown
exponentially over the
years as hundreds of
artists, musicians, organizations and food
vendors display a vitality that is infectious.
I was particularly attracted to the not-
for-profit sector where some friends had
a booth on sustainable neighborhoods.
Surrounding them were charitable,
political and religious groups addressing
the needs of vulnerable populations:
homeless, substance abusers, ex-felons,
immigrants. It was good to check in with
folks I had worked with over the years and
hear their passion for their causes.
As I walked among the booths people
asked me to sign their petitions hoping
to influence state and federal legislatures
to address unmet community priorities.
When I listened to their sense of urgency
about the causes they were advocating, I
realized how discouraged I had become
about the possibility of meaningful change
in our polarized, lobbyist-driven political
system. They challenged me to hope
again and to believe that no effort for
justice even as seemingly insignificant
as signing a petition or writing a letter is
ever lost. I signed my name and thanked
them for reminding me to keep faith in our
collective future.
