Pruning time
The warm change in the weather has the grounds crew thinking
about spring and all the new growth that always follows the long, cold
winter. This time of year we start to prune the thousands of shrubs
and perennials that live at Windsor Gardens.
This month we will be removing any spent parts of the plants to ready
them for the new growth that is expected. We cut grasses, Spirea of
many varieties and the many different perennials down to where the
new growth is just starting to show. This type of pruning can look very
drastic to some, but in reality this rejuvenation is beneficial. Most of
the bigger shrubs like Lilac, Viburnum, and Mock Orange will flower
on growth that is one year or older. But Hydrangea, Spirea, and
perennials all flower on new growth, so by starting the plants over it
promotes health and lots of flowers.
It might seem a little early to start this project but it is a big job that
takes well over a month to complete, and we still need to trim as many
trees as possible before the May flower plantings.
Let’s hope we get a few good wet snowstorms in March to really kick
start all of our flowering plants.
On April 19, 9Health Fair returns to Windsor Gardens to provide life-
saving, professional health screenings to our community. Our fair will
open at 7 a.m. and screenings will end at 12 p.m. This year's fair will
feature most of the screenings available last year, including skin, foot
and hand screening.
The price for the blood chemistry screening stays the same this year:
$35. This screening provides information about blood sugar (glucose),
cholesterol, triglycerides, liver, kidney, bone and muscle function, and
may show warning signs of diabetes, heart disease and other medical
concerns. Quite a bargain considering the same testing through your
doctor's office could cost between $200 and $300 in co-pays. This is
definitely the best, easiest and least expensive way to take charge of
your health!
As was true last year, the 9Health Fair Medical Advisory Committee
has determined that fasting is not required (optional) for blood
screenings.
To best prepare for a blood draw, drink plenty of water and continue to
take prescription medications. People with diabetes should not fast.
Check with your medical provider for specific recommendations.
Save the date of April 19 and please support our fair. You may register
and pay online at 9HealthFair.org. You are also welcome to pay with
