This Is Not Normal
Recently I was asked
to prepare a series
of conversations on
environmental issues for
our adult Sunday school.
Over the year I have
listened to the warnings
about melting polar ice
caps, water pollution and
unhealthy air particles. On the evening
news I have watched houses floating down
the streets of the south and the mid-west
which have never flooded before. I have
watched the Gulf of Mexico flooded with oil
and heard about the acceptable levels of
poisonous chemicals in drinking water.
I realize that while I am somewhat
concerned, I have slowly accepted these
events as a “new normal”. But when I saw
on the front page of the September 24 issue
of the Denver Post the picture of a woman
standing in a pumpkin field full of crops
she can’t sell because the groundwater
is poisoned and the fact that thousands
of Coloradans who have been drinking
that water have been exposed to cancer-
causing chemical waste, I was stunned.
Making thousands of people drink water
from plastic bottles is not normal.
People of all faiths who believe that
the Creator’s idea of normal is a world
that sustains human and animal life in
perpetuity – with clean water, clean air,
fertile soil, sustainable resources and a
livable climate – must insist with the ballot
and public pressure to restore spaceship
earth so that future generations will thank
us.
