Down to Earth
From Dana Cusack, Grounds Maintenance Supervisor
A pet-friendly landscape
August 26 was National Dog Day, and I got to thinking about all
the people with pets that live here in Windsor Gardens. We really
are a pet-friendly community; we offer almost 20 dog stations with
biodegradable bags and 13 dog pens where the little guys can go in
“private”. We have installed miles of paw-friendly, rounded cement
curbing and soft cedar mulch instead of sharp metal edging and
pointed rock groundcovers.
Some of you pet owners might have noticed that we added a few new
little plastic fire hydrants in the landscape for our four-legged friends.
These are intended as aiming posts, and maybe they will keep the
pets away from the possibly dangerous plants.
If you have a dog, here are a few important things you should know
about the landscape. Tall ornamental grasses have a sharp grass
blade that if ingested, can cut a dog’s stomach. Some weeds such
as purslane are toxic to dogs. That is one reason you will see us out
spraying weeds this fall. Spring flowering bulbs and iris tubers are also
toxic. Some plants such as foxglove digitalis can cause heart failure.
Lilies, including day lilies, can cause GI upset. Wild and potentially
toxic mushrooms that grow in wet conditions should also be avoided.
To help keep your pet happy and healthy, know your plants and watch
what they are chewing on.
In the September issue of Windsor Life we published a table showing
the responsibility for repairs at Windsor Gardens. Corrections for
three of the items follow.
ƒ
ƒ
Drywall cracks, but not the paint damaged by the crack, within a unit
(interior walls) are the responsibility of the Association, rather than
the owner, for both two- and four-story buildings and townhomes.
ƒ
ƒ
Painting repair within a unit that is not from an insurable cause is the
responsibility of the owner. The published table incorrectly stated
"uninsurable cause".
ƒ
ƒ
Hard-wired smoke alarms installed by the Association near the unit’s
front door are the responsibility of the Association, and any hard-
wired smoke alarms installed by the owner are the responsibility of
the owner.

The Challenge School at Mississippi and Dayton hosts a Veterans
Day celebration breakfast every year. This year it’s the morning of
November 11. They’d love to include Windsor Gardens’ veterans and
their families. Are you a veteran or do you know a veteran? Please
email Pamela Nocerino at
or
call 720-747-2132 with the veteran’s name, military branch, email or
physical address, and any other important background information
for the students who will be planning this meaningful celebration of
gratitude and respect.

Enrolling in Medicare and keeping up with the changing policies
and guidelines can seem overwhelming. To learn more and receive
guidance through the process, join the Colorado Gerontological
Society on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium
for an informative Medicare Monday workshop to learn about changes
to Medicare for 2016. Sign up at the Activities Desk. The Medicare
Monday program includes information on the changes, updates and
requirements for Medicare Parts A, B, C and D. Learn how these
changes may affect you and your health care in the coming year.
