LONG-TIME VOLUNTEER LIBRARIAN RETIRES
From Cynthia Courtney, Activities Director
Vera Sutphin has volunteered in the WG Library for 17 years. When
Vera and her husband Ken moved here in April 1994 she had retired
from teaching, ready to relax and travel. In 1999 she decided to look
for ways to occupy her time and the library seemed like a great fit.
Since that time Vera has logged has an estimated 12,000+ plus
hours volunteering. Talk about dedication!
When Vera started volunteering, Helen Gowan was the Head Library
Volunteer. Quickly Vera fell into pace with Helen and a friendship
was made that lasted many years. The two of them managed to
keep the small space neat and tidy while acquiring many books
over time. It is impossible to know how many book covers were
carefully placed on books or the number of bright orange stickers
claiming the books as WG Library books that were adhered to the
spines by their hands.
When Helen fell ill back in 2012 Vera took on more and more work to keep things running
smoothly. Eventually Helen left WG to be closer to family and Vera jumped in taking the reins.
Though we missed Helen things continued in a very orderly fashion as you would expect if you
know Vera.
Now it’s 2016 and Vera has decided to slow down, although she confesses it’s been hard to fill
her time with Sudoku, puzzles and crosswords. It just isn’t the same as staying busy with the
never ending list of library work
and projects she used to have.
Vera has passed the torch to
our new Head Librarian Daryle
Schneider whom you will come
to know in future months.
Thank you, Vera, for the years
of love and dedication that you
poured into our library. Please
don’t be a stranger. There are
a few books in the library you
haven’t read yet and more
coming every month!
